Massage Therapy
Therapeutic massage has a great impact on healing, especially if it is related to pain. The main types of massage I practice are Swedish/Circulatory, Tui-Na, and Deep Tissue. Also, I integrate Thai, stretching and traction, and Shiatsu depending on what’s called for.
Swedish massage is invigorating yet effectively relaxes the central nervous system. Lotion or oil is used with a variety of strokes such as kneading, effleurage, and petrissage to smooth and stretch muscles and connective tissue.
Tui-Na massage is a form of massage that uses the meridian system to locate trigger points throughout the body. These points are the same as acupuncture points. The rolling technique feels like a ball rolling on the skin. Kneading is used to break up stagnant or knotted tissue, while pressing stimulates trigger points.
Deep tissue massage, as the name suggest, is just that. This technique is used for stubborn areas such as scar tissue that obstructs normal movement. Since deep tissue is mostly painful, I only use it in small doses where applicable. I have used deep tissue successfully to improve posture and gait.
